Boy, That Didn't Take Long . . .
DECEMBER 31, 2006

Our last adoptions for 2006 began on December 24th with an e-mail from Rita.  She was in the process of submitting our Pre-Adoption Questionnaire but needed a vet reference.  She was all ready for new arrivals to occupy her beautiful C&C cage which she and her boyfriend had already built - 3 levels and about 18 sq. ft.!!  We sent her the names of two vets in her area who were being utilized by other of our adopters and she chose one (after calling both) and completed the Questionnaire which we received and approved on December 26th.  Her return e-mail was full of excitement - she couldn't wait to show her new furballs their new home!!

Rita and her boyfriend, Justin arrived at our Center on the very last day of 2006, December 31st after having driven from Fairborn, OH (about an hour's drive) and were introduced to our only available pair at the time, Poppy and Georgia.  The scene in the playpen was priceless!!  Two little piggies checking out two humans is definitely something to watch.  Poppy and Georgia enjoyed baby spinach leaves offered by Rita and Justin.  Rita and Justin enjoyed the friendly little nips and licks of Guinea pigs getting to know them.

And then Poppy started doing what she does so well - POPPING!!  She was one happy little girl!  Georgia was also enjoying all the attention she was receiving in the form of having her head rubbed - she will sit and let you do that until your hand goes numb!

We could tell the decision had been made.  Rita and Justin had found their furballs and Poppy and Georgia had found their FOREVER HOME!!  What a wonderful way to begin the New Year!

First, Let Me Preface All Our Christmas Stories . . .

In my opinion, pets of any species should never be given as surprise gifts to anyone for any special occasion!  This includes birthdays!  The committment to one of God's creatures is for the life of the animal and that furry or feathered or scaly little guy or girl should be loved, cared for and treated just like any other member of the family.  We're not talking about a sweater or a necktie that you can return because it doesn't fit or you don't like the color.  We are talking about a living, breathing creation of God's who loves unconditionally and who will try to communicate with you in the best and only way he or she knows.

It had been TLP&M's policy in the past to virtually 'shut down' during the months of November and December.  We had experienced first-hand the repercussions of giving 'pets' as gifts - a surge of releases during the months of February thru April with such reasons as "he's not cute anymore", "it was fun for a while but I just don't have time for the added work", "she/he lost interest".  Can you or would you take one of your children back to the hospital where he or she was born when he or she becomes a card-carrying member of the 'Terrible Twos' or because you now have a teenager you are not quite sure with which to deal?  OF COURSE NOT!!  Then why do we do it to any other member of the family just because he or she isn't human??

Please - Help stop the cycle - Don't buy into "the throw-away" mind-set of our present society!  When you adopt any pet, you are adopting a new member of your family.  That furry or feathered or scaly little boy or girl will form a very important bond with you and your family.  The selection of a pet is the beginning of that bonding process and should NEVER be a surprise!!  TLP&M will only approve adoptions during the months of November and December when and ONLY WHEN the new parent of one of our piggys comes to our Center to meet all our Adoptables.

So Long to Wait . . .
DECEMBER 27, 2006

Consider this . . . you're 6-yrs-old, a true animal lover (even bugs!), have baby-sat your friend's Guinea pig, and find out you are getting your own furball for Christmas!!  In mid November you met and found the Guinea pig who is now your own (his name is Spanky) BUT he will not be moving to be with you until after Christmas - you have to wait until December 27th!  Now, how many ants do you think occupy your pants!!

Believe me, little Kate must have felt like there were thousands!!  But, being a very good GP mommy, she wanted what was best for Spanky!  She wanted him to come home with her when the house was settled down from all the hub-bub of Christmas.  However, it wasn't very easy being so patient for so long.  Spanky was all she could talk about.

But the days flew by and, before she knew it, her Big Day was here!!  At 9am on December 27th she arrived with her mom, Lisa and her brother, Jake to take her new friend, Spanky home.  Her excitement was so big you couldn't have cut through it!!  Her eyes sparkled; her voice expressed it; her happiness was brighter than the sun!  Spanky was one very lucky little furball!  He had found his Forever Home and would be lavished with love, attention and the devotion of a very caring and thoughtful 6-yr-old mommy and her wonderful family!

All I Want for Christmas . . .
DECEMBER 24, 2006

Our first contact with Sherri was in November, shortly before Thanksgiving.  Her 8-yr-old son, a Jr. Zoologist at his school and his 5-yr-old sister had been considering the adoption of Guinea pigs for a long time and Sherri knew this was a big commitment.  With Christmas coming, she felt it was time.  After a telephone conversation with Sherri, a meet-and-greet playdate was scheduled.

Kenneth and Katie met (and fell in love with) Olivia and Wheezie as evidenced by the e-mail we received on November 27th:  "Thank you so much for letting my children and I visit last week with the Guinea pigs.  Kenneth and Katie are very excited about Olivia and Wheezy and are counting the days until we get to pick them up."  That's right - Olivia and Wheezie had been adopted as Christmas presents BUT would not be going to their new Forever Home until after the hectic family holiday out-of-state!   Moving to a new home is stressful enough for a Guinea pig - what with all the new sounds, smells, colors, etc. No need to throw in even greater stressers like more strange people and sounds!  Plus there was time to acquire all supplies needed and to build a playpen and to start saving paper rolls for Olivia and Wheezie.  Each new day brought more excitement as the big Homecoming Day - December 24th - drew closer and closer!

Then it was here!!  They were coming to pick-up Olivia and Wheezie.  Sherri related to me that the kids wanted her to call me at 7am that morning but she told them their appointment wasn't until 9am.  (Thank you so much, Sherri!!  I'm still in need of coffee at 7am!)  Promptly at 9am, Kenneth, Katie and their parents, Sherri and Ted were at the door.  The eyes of these two children were so big and bright they shone from across the room!  Olivia and Wheezie were waiting in the playpen.  They knew it was 'Moving Day' and, with their bags packed, were ready to go to their new Forever Home!

Thank you, Kenneth, Katie, Sherri and Ted.  We know Olivia and Wheezie are in very good hands!!

Only Room for One . . .
DECEMBER 23, 2006

On November 19, 2006, I received a Pre-Adoption Application from Heather.  After three wonderful years, her 13-yr-old daughter's, Miranda, two beautiful dwarf hamsters had begun their journey to Rainbow Bridge earlier in the year.  Miranda was heartbroken at their passing and had been an excellent mommy so Heather wanted to 'surprise' her with a Guinea pig for Christmas!!  For those who know me, there went a red flag right away.  I explained my feelings regarding pets as surprise gifts to Heather and we devised a plan for Miranda to come to our Center and meet our furballs without her knowing!

They were to arrive on our doorstep on the morning of December 23rd.  Miranda would not know where she was going - only that she was going someplace that was not close to home (they drove from Springboro, OH).  I in turn figured I would move my "sign-encrusted" van out of the driveway so Miranda would be more surprised when she walked into our Center.  I was excited . . . Heather was excited . . . All supplies were purchased and stashed in the shed so Miranda wouldn't stumble upon them . . . then the wait began - the wait for December 23rd to arrive!

WELL - you know the saying "the best laid plans . . . "  I DROPPED THE BALL!!  December 23rd arrived.  After my morning coffee, I went upstairs to take a shower and get dressed so I could move the van out of the driveway but was side-tracked.  Better check my e-mail in case anything had changed.  And the time ticked away . . . Before I knew it, KNOCK!! KNOCK!!  They were here!  I was still in my sweats and house slippers!!  My hair was a mess!!  THE VAN WAS STILL IN THE DRIVEWAY!!  Oh well, I've never been one to stand on ceremony so down the stairs I went.

First things first - K.C., our adorable mutt, was barking his head off to inform me someone was here to see HIM (which is what he always thinks whenever someone comes to the door) so I had to get him outside or no one would be able to hear themselves talk.  (K.C. likes to dominate conversations.)  Once that was taken care of, I rushed back to the door to let Heather and Miranda into our home (Dad decided to wait outside in the heated car and keep the motor running).  I looked at MIranda and  said, "Well, do you know where you are and why you're here?"  DUMB QUESTION!!    Heather responded with, "She figured it out when she saw the sign on your van!"  I kicked myself - knew moving the van would have been the right thing to do!  Let's meet piggies!!

Normally, when there is only room for one Guinea pig in a family we recommend the adoption of a single male.  But something told me this was to be Loretta's Forever Home.  I was pretty confident that Loretta would be more than happy being the only pig in HER houseful of humans and one Miniature Schnauzer.   Loretta had quickly established herself as the Alpha in the female herd and was not afraid to let anyone and everyone know it.  She was "The Boss" and don't you ever forget it.  I asked Miranda if she would like to meet Loretta and they both went into the playpen.

This is always the part I love . . . watching the bond simply blossom right in front of your eyes!!  I knew we had a match . . . even though I asked Miranda if she wanted to meet some of our males.  Her response was priceless!  I want Loretta!!  I do believe these two were made for each other!

Thank you Heather and Miranda (and Dad too even though I didn't meet you - you kept the car warm for Loretta!)

UPDATE:
There has been a name change for Loretta - one which suits her to a 'T'.  Her name is now Lola as in "Whatever Lola wants . . . Lola gets".  Yes, Miranda is a very good GP mommy and is spoiling her little Lola rotten.  Keep up the good work, Miranda!!

A Gift From Abby . . .
DECEMBER 16, 2006

I truly believe I have received a Christmas present from my wonderful Abby.  Have you read the story dated 12-14-06 of Pony, Toby and Deedy?  My present is referred to in that story only as having come from our local SPCA and being brought to us by Deedy.

When she first arrived here, I named her Julia.  She was just so beautiful, a gorgeous tri-color Abyssinian with the markings of an Australian Shepherd - she needed a beautiful name!  I felt so drawn to her but I really didn't know why.  If she was sitting in my lap and the phone rang, she had to talk to whoever was calling.  She spoke to Beth (Lelani and Bordeaux's mommy) for about 10 minutes.  She talked to Connie, our foster mommy.  When she wasn't on the phone, she talked to me almost non-stop.  The first few days she spent every night in my lap watching TV (and talking).  She had so much to tell me - then it hit me - so many of her mannerisms reminded me of my precious Abby.  Had Abby sent her to me?  Was that what she was trying to tell me?  I stroked her head and, like Abby would do, she butted my hand away only to let me begin stroking her head again.

I spoke to Deedy on the phone, letting her know that I had decided to adopt this little girl I had renamed GABBY! (Gee, I wonder why!!)  Her response?  "I had a feeling you would.  I saw the resemblence to Abby right away."

Thank you, Deedy for bringing Gabby to me from the SPCA.  And most of all, Thank you Abby from giving me Gabby!!  You will always occupy most of my heart and be #1 with me.  No one could ever replace you - you are a very, very special furball and friend.

One Guinea Pig is Not Enough . . .
DECEMBER 16, 2006

Indianapolis, IN now has three new residents, namely Candy Cane, Priscilla and Gina.  These three wonderful little girls have found their Forever Home with Jennifer, Aaron and Jordan.  And what a great family!!

It all started on December 5th when we received the Pre-Adoption Application and an e-mail asking if Candy Cane was still available.  But this family had done their homework and knew one furball was a lonely furball!  We were asked who amongst our other girls would be a good match for Candy Cane.  That's when I began to worry just a little.  You see, Candy is a very submissive little girl - she could go with just about any one of our other girls.  My dilemma was that out of eight possibilities, four had just been confirmed as pregnant so the 'pool' had just decreased by leaps and bounds.  My only choices were Loretta, the very dominant alpha of the female herd; 'Prissy Diva' Priscilla, #2 in command who always got her way; and Gina, the one who had visions of being top dog (mostly in her own dreams, I must add).  Steve and I put our heads together and decided Priscilla would be the best choice; she had actually helped Candy with her last baby which had been a total surprise to Steve and I just a little over three weeks prior.

Then a new e-mail from Jennifer added a new twist - her husband, Aaron also wanted to adopt Gina - this was to be a 3-furball household!!  What would that do to the pecking order of this little herd?  Would Gina be relentless in chasing Candy Cane?  Would she rise against Priscilla to challenge for the alpha position?  Only one thing to do - bring these three together without the rest of the female herd and see what would happen.

The female habitat was divided in half and
Loretta was left with only Ruth and Naomi to boss around.  Priscilla, Gina and Candy Cane began their life together as a separate herd.   I half-way expected  bedding and fur to fly and was so very relieved and happy for these three to prove me wrong.  Prissy Priscilla was definitely in her element.  Before long she had Candy Cane and Gina granting her every wish and whim - just like any experienced diva!  All that was left was for Jennifer, Aaron and Jordan to arrive and pick up their new family members.

Thank you so very much to this wonderful family!!  A better home for these three just isn't out there!  They were definitely meant to be with you.

Pony's New Buddy . . .
DECEMBER 14, 2006

This is the story of a rescuer becoming an adopter.  On December 12, 2006 Deedy called to say she had found two GPs at our local SPCA and hoped we had room so she could bring them to us.  She first took them for a vet check and then brought them to us later that evening.  These two were absolutely adorable!!  Both Tri-Colored, both Abyssinians, both with respiratory infections yet both extremely friendly.  Unfortunately, not both the same sex as they had been housed together at the SPCA.  Deedy left but I knew in my heart she would be returning!!

And I wasn't wrong!  I received the e-mail on the 14th which read in part - "Most importantly, I wanted to ask if you would put "Mr. Abyssinian" on hold as I would like to see if Pony (Deedy's own adorable furball) likes him.  I thought about it for a while and something is telling me he may be the one for both Pony and me."  I knew Pony - he had stayed with us last year while Deedy went to visit a rescue in the state of Utah.  Yes, he would like "Mr. Abyssinian" who I had since named Toby.  They were both pretty laid-back - this could be a definite match-up of two males.

I didn't even wait to see the outcome of the meeting between Pony and Toby - Toby was marked as Adopted (he hadn't even made it to the pages of PetFinder.com!)  Deedy's contract was dated December 14th and we waited for day to arrive when Toby would be going to his new Forever Home.

Deedy and Pony arrived on December 19th and the introduction began.  When introducing two males, I normally recommend the "towel method" but Deedy and I both felt strongly that this would work so into the playpen the boys went - together - and we waited, towel in hand (just in case).  All was quiet.  I brought in a bowl full of greens and the two boys ate together as if they had known each other for decades.

Pony had found his friend and Toby had found his Forever Home!!  Deedy now had two furballs to love and who absolutely loved her right back!

Just Too Excited . . .
DECEMBER 13, 2006

Imagine my surprise when I returned home to find a car in my driveway with Kentucky license plates!!  Had I forgotten an adoption appointment?  Was my memory really beginning to fade so quickly??

I had gone to visit my father who lives very close to Steve and I regarding Christmas dinner plans.  To the best of my knowledge, I was expecting no one.  The car was not a familiar one so who was here??  My husband met me at the door and said, "Did you know you had people coming to see pigs?"  Of course, my answer was "I knew nothing."  Then Michael explained.  "After we received news that our application for adoption had been approved, we were just so excited we couldn't wait!  We do apologize for not calling - we were just too excited.  I hope it's OK that we just drove up from Florence, KY.  We really want to take Meeny and Poco home with us!"

POCO and MEENY!!  I knew that's who they said they were interested in when they submitted their Pre-Adoption Application but now it was a reality - POCO and MEENY!!  They had been with us for what seemed to be forever.  Meeny came to us as a baby about 2 years ago - Poco was born here on June 11, 2005.  Talk about attached to two furballs.  And now they were leaving . . . could I really let them go??

Michael continued.  "My wife has talked of little else since she first saw Meeny's picture and Poco is such a handsome guy.  We promise to give them a very good home.  They will be very loved."  Meeny just melted in the arms of Maianne as she softly spoke to and cuddled him.  Poco seemed so relaxed and content when Michael held him.  This was right.  Yes, I could let go.  These two neighbors and friends had found their Forever Home and my wish that they would be adopted together had come true.

Thank you, Michael and Maianne.  Take very good care of these very special guys for me.  They own a very large chunk of my heart.

Love at First Sight (again) ! ! . . .
DECEMBER 9, 2006

This little girl's hard road has finally ended.  First there was a stroke when she was just a baby resulting in a slight head tilt.  Then she had been abandoned and left on a front porch of a neighbor before finding her way to TLP&M.  Her first adoption ended after only 8 months when her daddy was transferred to England.  This little sweetheart again resided with us here at TLP&M.  As time went by, Steve and I kept getting more and more attached to her and toyed with the idea of making her a permanent member of "The Resident Herd".

But then Natalie's Pre-Adoption Application arrived on November 15th.  She was due to arrive at our Center on December 2nd and wanted to meet 'our Penny'.  Mixed emotions flooded over me.  But on December 2nd the phone rang - "Karen, it's Natalie.  I'm stuck in Denver due to a big snow storm.  Can we re-schedule for next week-end?"  "Of course", I answered.  "We'll see you then."  Good, I had one more week with this darling little furball we called Penny.  Would I be able to let her go??

Upon meeting Natalie, my decision was very easy.  She was indeed Penny's new mommy.  It was written all over her face.  Penny's Forever Home might have been postponed for a week but she had definitely found what she had always been looking for - her one special human.

Celebrating Birthdays Together!
DECEMBER 8, 2006

"I saw your ad on PetFinder.com and am very interested in adopting Ben.  Interestingly, he and I were both born in late March so we can celebrate our birthdays together."  Thus began the first of many e-mails I would receive from Grace.

First, let me assure all of you that while most our our Adoptables actual birthdates are unknown, we try very hard to guess-timate those dates as closely as we possibly can.  Yes, we do have to rely on information received from previous owners and some memories are better than others but we do the best we can.  Then there are those who arrive at TLP&M 'under-wraps' so to speak - pregnant females who are being surrendered - for those new babies we definitely know birthdates!!

Upon meeting face-to-face, Grace knew Ben was definitely The Little Piggy for her.  And being the very dominant pig that he is, having her all to himself was 'just what the doctor ordered'.  Thank you Grace!  I know that Ben has found his Forever Home with you and that you and he will spend many wonderful hours and years together.

Bitten by THE BUG . . .
DECEMBER 2, 2006

The Guinea pig bug, that is!!  As most lovers of Guinea pigs will tell you, these little furballs just seem to grow on you.  Like potato chips, you can't stop at just one.  In Suzi's case, she didn't want to stop at two . . . three or four seemed like a good number!  So she brought her two little ones to meet our herd and the fun began.

Suzi had 'adopted' her two 'babies' from a dog groomer who housed them in her shop.  They were very young and were not being loved on very much so Suzi asked if she could adopt them.  The dog groomer agreed.  She loved the little guys but knew she didn't have the time they really and truly needed.  Unfortunately, upon arrival at TLP&M and closer inspection, we noticed Suzi had one boy and one girl!  These two would need to be separated which meant new friends were on the agenda.

Suzi decided to divide her C&C habitat and keep her little boy next door to his sister.  Yes, fences do make for great neighbors, don't they!!  Now to find the little girl a friend and we felt we had the perfect match - Karly!!  She was not a dominant female who would go all out to establish the pecking order - Steve and I felt she was more tolerant and would discipline her new 'baby' gently so as not to make the process unbearable for Suzi.  The introduction was made and we waited for any signs of disapproval from Karly.  There was an occasional nip when food was added to the mix but it was minimal.  Karly was as we thought she would be - tolerant and gentle - and on her way to her FOREVER HOME!!

Thanks, Suzi.  You adopted one amazing piggy.
And a BIG Thank you to Janelle in Louisville, KY for saving Karly from a kill-shelter and bringing her to TLP&M.

Just So Hard to Decide . . .
DECEMBER 2, 2006

Just as it should be, this adoption was most definitely a 'family affair'!!  Their Pre-Adoption Application stated that Mom wanted  a furball to play with and love on.  But when Jessica, Tom, Lauren and Megan arrived we could tell right away whoever was adopted by this family was going to be loved and cared for by everybody.  Yes, the chosen one (or ones) would definitely be going to their FOREVER HOME; a Piggy Palace so to speak.

They had done their research and almost knew every piggy by name but had not settled on anyone or either sex in particular.  So playtime began and the boys were first to  join the family in the play pen which had been divided into two areas so we could see two boys at a time.  One by one the boys were introduced to the family.  Meeny just wanted to get back to his habitat; Ben was too interested in finding out who was on the other side of the pen.  Jessica and her family wanted to see Zeke, our 3-week old baby so we installed the baby fence inside the playpen for his safety  (he could still get his head between the grids).  Cheetah replaced Ben and Jessica got in a little cuddle time.

"We would also like to meet the girls."  So the two remaining boys went back and all the girls came out.  After about five minutes, the first decision had been made - the family preferred the males.  And who was the lucky winner in the male department . . . we knew no one can resist a baby - especially Zeke!

WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO RESIST THIS FACE?

The search continued for Pig #2.
Would be nice if they got along but dividing their over-sized C&C habitat was always an option - it was definitely big enough for two.  But who??   "He is such a cuddler!  Do you think Cheetah would be a good choice to interact with Zeke?" Talk about happiness - Steve and I were in heaven - Finally, someone had seen through that tough facade of Cheetah's to find that lover of a pig just beneath the surface.

Thanks to Jessica and her wonderful family, two very special furballs found their FOREVER HOME.

Patch Just Lost His Lifelong Friend
NOVEMBER 26, 2006

He's a little depressed and needs a new buddy to help with the grief.

Friends are so important not only to those of us who walk on two legs but also for our companions who bring so much joy and laughter to our lives.  Loss of a friend and the mourning, grief and depression that accompanies that loss is not just a human emotion . . . our animals feel it too!  Talking about our lost friend helps tremendously so when Stacy called to ask about a new friend for Patch, we knew it was the very best thing we could do for him.

Getting two males to get along isn't always a piece of cake!!  But we had an idea that maybe Rhino would be Patch's perfect match.  Call it instinct . . . call it a hunch . . . call it whatever you like but we call it SUCCESS!!

After the initial period of "The Towel Method", Patch and Rhino were placed in the playpen together and we waited.  Would there be a fight?  They checked each other out, they rumbled a little, they followed each other, they rumbled a little more, they ate together, they talked and talked and talked . . . then they laid down together.  Patch had found a new friend and Rhino had found his Forever Home!!

UPDATE:  Another instance of how fences makes GREAT neighbors.  Seems the honeymoon is over.  Rhino and Patch got into it one night and the fur flew.  Patch sustained the worst end of the deal but will be fine as will Rhino.  Separation was definitely called for however.  Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, getting two boys to live together peacefully isn't always possible.

Just a note to Reese . . .

Sweet dreams and lush fields, Reese.  You brought a bounty of happiness and joy to your entire human family and were such a wonderful friend to Patch.  We will all see you soon but for now, enjoy your time at Rainbow Bridge.  We all do love you and miss you very, very much.  Thank you for the time shared with us.

Where is Peppers?  We Fell in Love on PetFinder.com . . .!!
NOVEMBER 26, 2006

I simply cannot tell you how many times love is found on PetFinder.com every month.  I do believe it is better at matches than any online dating service!!

Marie and her family had already made a trip to Michigan and adopted a cutie-pie of a very young furball by the name of Oompa-Loompa.  Now they needed to find her a friend and Peppers had caught Marie's eye.  But would it be a good match for Oompa-Loompa (I love that name!!)  So on Saturday, November 25th, Marie and her family came by TLP&M to meet Peppers and the rest of our adoptable females.  By now y'all know what happened next - all our girls (except those on pregnancy watch) joined Oompa-Loompa in the playpen and we humans just watched.  I have never seen such popping from one little girl.  Oompa-Loompa was in 7th Heaven - so many playmates - how do I choose?  She flitted from one female to the next.  "No one in particular, Mom.  Think you can help with this decision?"  So Marie began the process of elimination until there were only two left - Priscilla and Peppers.  Priscilla was a cuddler which really made Marie feel good while Peppers was a little more stand-offish and skittish.  Maybe Priscilla would be better and the decision was made.  All seemed fine until Sunday afternoon when we received a call from Marie.

Priscilla was being the prissy little diva and really giving Oompa-Loompa a hard time.  She wouldn't let her in the house.  She would nip at her when she tried to eat.  "I really think I made the wrong decision.  I hate to do this but could we please exchange Prissy Priscilla for Peppers?  I knew I should have listened to my instincts!"  Of course our answer was yes.  You see, it's all about the piggies - we'll do anything (and everything) in our power to make all our furballs happier than they have ever been!!

You Just Never Know . . .!!
NOVEMBER 5, 2006

Yes, furballs seem to always occupy my mind . . . but I never thought for an instant that I would find Goliath's perfect match when I went to get my hair cut one afternoon!!  At first I was disappointed.  Ladies, you know how it is when you find someone who really 'knows your head' at a beauty shop and then you go back only to find that they no longer work there . . . and you don't know where they went!!  But then Brenda came to my rescue and became my new stylist.  That's when we started talking (we do bare our souls to our beauticians, don't we!!)

Of course, the conversation turned to piggies - (My conversations tend to always lean in that direction anyway!) - and what wonderful little creatures they are.  Then we started talking about kids - my grandchildren (2 girls and one boy) and her son, Zack.  I think you can take it from here - put kids and pigs together and what do you get??  "Why don't you and Zack come by one Saturday for a playdate?  The pigs love company and would love to have someone to play with."

When Zack walked into our MAIN furball room (yes, there is more than one room at the present time), his eyes lit up like fireworks on the 4th of July!!  And guess who came over to say "Hi!" - Goliath, the pig formerly known as Bailey!!  I do believe it was love at first sight (again!!).  Zack couldn't take him home that day (had to prepare for the new arrival) but it wasn't long before Goliath was in his new Forever Home!!

Thanks Brenda and Zack . . . we know Goliath is in very good hands!

October

TJ's New Family!!
OCTOBER 19, 2006

Debbie called one day to ask if she and TJ could visit our piggys.  TJ was Debbie's friend and she felt he was lonely.  You see, he lived alone and needed a friend who he could take care of and love and adore.  She wasn't sure if he would even want a Guinea pig but thought a visit might be a good way to open the door for discussion of a pet.  I was a little skeptical at first with this whole idea - adopting a pet is definitely a lifetime committment!!  Our little furballs absolutely love company however so a playdate was scheduled.

When TJ walked into our home (which we findly refer to as 'The Barn') he was totally surprised!!  His eyes began to sparkle and he couldn't help but smile.  Then Debbie told him why they were here and his excitement just escalated.  Earlier in his life, he had worked for a vet.  Why hadn't he thought of pet adoption before!!  Oh yes, he would definitely take care of a Guinea pig (or two), that is if there were a furball (or two) who wanted to go home with him.  "They have to want me for a daddy.  Do you think you have one (or two) who would like me??"

TJ entered our main room and was immediately greeted by Frankie who came right up to him and let him pet him.  Frankie (being a neutered male) lived with his 'wife', Ginger who was a little more timid than her partner.  She always let Frankie be the leader; if he gave her the 'all clear', then she would join in.  They were inseperable.  But could TJ handle two or would one single male be better for him?

TJ played with several of our single males in the "playpen" but the bond just wasn't there.  So Ginger and Frankie joined TJ and the bond was almost instantaneous!!  But the 'cage' that had already been purchased wasn't big enough for two.  The adoption would have to wait for a week or two while everything was made ready.  TJ wanted to pig-proof his apartment so Frankie and Ginger could have free-range daily.  He wanted to purchase one of "Our Daddy's Creations" Habitat - how quick could it be built?  He also wanted to purchase the Hidey House that these two furballs had called home since their arrival at TLP&M.

Frankie and Ginger had found their FOREVER HOME . . .
even though they had to wait for a little while before actually arriving there!

The Day Finally Arrived!!
OCTOBER 2, 2006

It was almost two years ago when TLP&M met the most wonderful and caring exotics vet, Dr. Kim Witalis who just happened to be one of our previous Adoptor's dear friend.  Imagine our surprise when she volunteered her time and knowledge to become our Visiting Vet.  Yes, you heard me correctly!!  Dr. Kim actually comes to our Center to check up on our Adoptables and we simply cannot thank her enough for all that she does!!  She was by my side when both Mozart and Galileo began their journeys to Rainbow Bridge.  Her heart broke along with mine at the passing of Abby and I will never be able to thank her enough for all her kindness and generosity.  She is truly a treasured friend and definitely thought of as a member of our "Herd"!

On one of her early visits, Rembrandt (who was born at TLP&M in March '04) decided he was going home with her.  I do believe he completely and totally fell in love with Dr. Kim.  She would peek into his habitat and he would come running to say "Hello!"  But as fate sometimes does, it was just not possible for Dr. Kim at that time.  Let's face it . . . she's a vet . . . with 3-4 dogs, 2-3 cats, 1-2 large tortoises, and who knows how many large birds sharing her house and home . . . plus she had a roommate!!  Where in the world would she find room?

With every visit, the love affair between Rembrandt and Dr. Kim grew.  Almost before he would hear her voice, Rembrandt would race to the front of his habitat and start squawking, "Dr. Kim's here!!  Dr. Kim's here!!  Is she taking me home today??"  And everytime Dr. Kim would walk up to Rembrandt and say, "Hello, handsome!  How ya' doin'?" and I would see the wheels of her brain begin turning and her decision had been made - had to make room for Rem to come live with her.  First order of business - get rid of the roommate - Rem would take over her room!

Shortly after the beginning of the new year, Dr. Kim came to our Center to check on our boys and girls; that is when she met Celia, our 'special needs' piggy who suffers with myopia and had been blind since birth.  Believe me, this was again definitely love at first sight for Dr. Kim.  I almost could not believe it myself but then she asked if she could adopt both Rembrandt and Celia - there was no way I would say No to two of our Adoptables having their very own, personal Doctor-on-call.  But the roommate was still not gone - the room was still not ready - could I, would I hold them for her??  DUH!!  That decision was definitely a no-brainer.

All the waiting came to an end on Monday, October 2, 2006 when the phone rang and Dr. Kim asked, "Would it be okay if I came by tonight to get my children?"  I wish y'all could have been here to see Celia's and Rem's reactions to knowing Dr. Kim was taking them home!!  Celia just kinda flopped over on her side while being held in Dr. Kim's arms, one very comfortable and relaxed little piggy feeling safe and secure.  And Rembrandt, what can I say - this little guy laid on her arm holding on with both front paws - he was in 7th heaven - this was HIS Dr. Kim and his wish of going home with her had finally come true!!

September

Bummed!!
SEPTEMBER 23, 2006

That was the response on Brianna's Pre-Adoption Questionnaire when asked "How would you feel about waiting for your special friend if none are available at the present time?"

Ten-year-old Brianna, the eldest of Dianne's three children, had purchased Buttercup (a 3-month old Guinea pig) from a pet shop.  After a little research, Brianna decided that Buttercup needed a friend which is where TLP&M came into the picture.  (Thank you for not going back to the pet store!!!)  The pet store had told Brianna that her new little furball was a female, hence the name Buttercup.  So when the family arrived at TLP&M, we began looking at little girls that could be a new friend.

Something told me I should double-check the sex of Buttercup - Boy!  Am I glad I did!!  Looks like Buttercup might be getting a new name because . . . CONGRATULATIONS Brianna - you are now the mommy of a bouncing baby BOY!  So now we had to switch gears and find a boy to be Boy Buttercup's new buddy which could be a real challenge.

I thought of Grady right away - he had lived with other males previously, namely Spot and Cadbury, when he was a baby and had grown accustomed to having other males around.  He had even played with Ripley on several occasions without incident.  Would he like Buttercup??  Would Buttercup like him??  Only one way to find out - they both went into the playpen together with me very close by armed with a towel in case a scuffle began.

The getting-to-know-you ritual began - they checked each other out - they talked - they rumbled - nose to nose - nose to rear - there was even a little mounting here and there; first one, then the other.  Then a little mound of greens was placed in the playpen and the two of them shared and ate side-by-side like they had known each other for years.  Then a little more talking, a little more rumbling.  Then PLOP!!  They both just laid down together and I knew all was well.  Buttercup (whose new name is yet to be determined) had found a friend and his name was Grady!!

Zara is Lonely and in Need of a Friend!!
SEPTEMBER 22, 2006

Zara, an adorable red and white American Guinea pig who is ~3 months old, was Jean's baby and Jean wanted her to be as happy and healthy as she could be.  She felt Zara was very lonely so she and her mother contacted TLP&M in hopes of finding a friend for her.  So on Friday night, Zara and her entire family arrived for just that purpose - Zara had a play date!!

Again, all our girls went to the playpen to play with Zara.  Again, one by one the process of elimination took its toll.  Again, Penny was the first to leave - she wanted no part of this!  Priscilla left next - I think she wants more time away from young'uns!  Karly was returned to her living quarters which left Gina and Loretta.  I was a little surprised!  These were two of our most dominant females!

Zara checked them both out and kept coming back to Loretta.  And Loretta seemed to really enjoy Zara's company!  You might say that when a piggy makes up her mind, nothing is going to change it!!

WHOOPS!!  There are times when things just do not work out!!  Seems that Loretta became Zara's nightmare once home and in the new surroundings.  So on Monday, September 25th, Loretta returned to TLP&M.  We are hoping Zara can find a new friend soon.

I Need a Friend.  Can You Help Me?   Signed:  Hazel
SEPTEMBER 21, 2006

Could you look at that face and even think of refusing to help??
Of course your answer is the same as ours - a BIG, resounding "Come on down, Hazel and see if your new friend is here at TLP&M!!"

When we first began corresponding with Hazel's mommy it was for informational purposes.  Nan, who operates a dog/cat rescue herself, had rescued Hazel from becoming snake food.  She knew very little about Guinea pigs but wanted to give Hazel the best care and provide for all her needs - mental, social and physical.  Hazel had been born with a deformed front leg - her paw turns in, with the pads toward her body.  However, after meeting her, it definitely does not slow this little girl down at all!!

Nan changed Hazel's diet and what was once skinny with a dull coat and lots of dry skin and dander blossomed into a beautiful and energetic red and white little girl.  I had to chuckle to myself when Nan expressed concern over the state of Hazel's coat.  She was alarmed that it was so coarse (like a Brillo pad) and not silky smooth as the Guinea pigs to which she had been accustomed.  Of course, one look at Hazel's picture solved that issue right away!!  She was a Teddy!!

Nan and Hazel arrived on Thursday night around 6:00pm.  Oh wait - I forgot to tell you something!  Nan and Hazel live in Huntington, WV - yes, you read that right - WEST VIRGINIA!!  They definitely had a road trip and Hazel loved every minute of her car ride.

Long story short - if you have followed our Success Stories, you know how we normally find new friends for little girl furballs - all our Adoptable girls come out to play and we rely upon the friend-seeker (Hazel, in this case) to use the process of elimination.  This time was no different.  Loretta was the first to be eliminated (she IS the dominant one of our herd), then out went Penny (no chemistry between she and Hazel).  One by one they left until we were down to two - Bailey and Brandy.  Those were Hazel's choices and she was stickin' to 'em!!

UPDATE:  A picture is worth a thousand words!!

Are All Our Furballs Deciding KY is Better than OH ??!!
SEPTEMBER 16, 2006

Yes, here we go again - more of our furballs moved to Kentucky!!  Do they know somethin' they're not telling me??

Pam is a lady after my own heart!!  When she first contacted TLP&M, I hate to say it, but I was more than a tad bit suspicious!!  First, she already had a "herd" consisting of 8 females and 3 males!  My first inclination was to totally 'nix' her application as I feared she was a breeder (and of course there will be none of that on my watch!)  Next she told me that her furballs were housed in the basement!!  I pictured our own basement which is not finished and I panicked.  Then she wanted to know if a friend could come and pick up the piggies for her.  That one was easy - the simple answer is No since part of our policy and Adoption Process is actually meeting potential adopters in person.  So I e-mailed her back with my concerns and point blank question of "Are you a breeder?"  Those of you who know me also know how to-the-point and blunt I can be!

Her response was wonderful.  She sent me pictures of her herd and their habitats.  She assured me that she was not a breeder - her husband would kill her if that ever happened!  And making the 2-3 hour trip from Springfield, KY was not a problem!  Could she please come meet our piggies on Saturday - she had her heart set on Winston and Delaney and couldn't wait any longer!!

Even though her trip was a little bumpy (a few wrong turns here and there - thank goodness for cell phones), I was so glad to finally meet her.  And what a sweetheart!  Her e-mail response had made me feel a whole lot better and meeting her simply confirmed my gut-feelings were so on target!!

Pam is definitely IN LOVE WITH GUINEA PIGS!!

Yes, she adopted Winston and Delaney
(who could resist those two sweet, adorable faces of father and son)
but then she totally surprised me!!

"I have fallen in love with Snickers.  Would it be okay if I adopted him also?"  Well, that was fine with me BUT . . . if you take Snickers, he comes with his cagemate and buddy, Tyson - can you commit to a package deal?  Of course, it only took a second for Pam to say Yes to the character we had come to love so very, very much!

Contracts were then signed, Steve and I said our good-byes (those aren't really all that easy) to Delaney, Winston, Snickers and Tyson, all the piggies were placed into their respective travelling cages and placed in the car for the return trip to Springfield.  Only one thing for Pam to do - say good-bye to all the ones she was leaving behind.

Then it happened!!  Pippi came out of her house and walked straight up to Pam and they touched noses!!  I was shocked!!  Pippi normally runs INTO her house when we have company and doesn't show her face again until everybody "strange" is gone!!  The lovebug had bitten Pam again!!  Please, please, please . . . and another contract was signed - another adoption in Pam's name took place!

Thank you so much Pam!!  Steve and I both know how loved and spoiled these five little piggies will be in your care.  It is so wonderful to know there is now a definite second "Guinea pig lady" in KY!

Two More Piggys Take a Trip to Kentucky!!
SEPTEMBER 4, 2006

There have been several of our furballs cross the Ohio River and take up residence in Kentucky lately - Butch Cassidy and Sundance becoming our latest!

Donna and her 10-year old daughter, Mackenzie arrived on Labor Day a little tired (after driving from Lexington to north of Cincinnati) but excited to see all our Adoptables.  Mackenzie wasn't looking for anything in particular except she was a little partial to the "bad-hair-day" look of the Abyssinian.  Then Mom saw Butch and Sundance - "Mackenzie, look at them - Aren't they beautiful!"  I must admit - I totally agree with her!

After a rather disappointing playpen experience with Butch and Sundance playing extremely hard-to-get, Donna and Mackenzie thought just maybe they would need to look at our girls.  Unfortunately, this side-step resulted in nothing to write home about either!  Maybe a single male was in order here.  Did anyone want to go home with Donna and Mackenzie?

Guinea pigs can be rather picky you know.  You just can't expect them to warm up to you immediately.  They need to get to know you - your smell, your taste, the sound of your voice, the colors you wear,  the food you have in your hand for them!!

Then it was decided to give Butch and Sundance one more try.  And that's all it took!!  Kentucky now has two more wonderful furballs to call its own!!

AUGUST

I Just Fell in Love with that Face!!
AUGUST 27, 2006

You just know a person is crazy for Guinea Pigs when they're willing to drive 2 hours one-way!!  That's how is was for Lorena.
Oh - she did bring her girls along but I knew it was Mom who wanted the furballs!!   AND, she had already told me over the phone that she was head-over-heels in love with Cecil.

But then, how could anyone look at this face and NOT fall in love!!

Upon arrival however, and meeting Cecil and his buddy, Xerxes, Lorena began having second thoughts.  The boys were a little more timid than she expected - a little scared even.  These guys HAD come a long way since being released to us in May - used to be that they wouldn't even let you touch them; they would scamper into their house and huddle together whenever we were in the room.  But now, I could reach in their habitat and pet them both.  No more hiding in their hidey house.  And did they love their Clementines!!  Couldn't wait for me to put them in their bowl - "Just give 'em up, already!!"  Plus how would you feel with a whole new set of smells, colors, sounds and three strange humans trying to warm up to ya'?

So we suggested she meet some of our girls who just might be a friendlier bunch.  Lorena - meet Bailey, Gina, Loretta and Karly - and wouldn't you know it, the girls just didn't seem all that interested!

"I really want Cecil.  I just love that face so much."  So off to LaGrange, KY our little guys went.  We're sure these guys will come out of their shells with all the love and attention Lorena is willing and able to give.  Once they get settled in, they will surely 'rule the roost'!

Can You Help Us Find a New Friend for Stinker??!!
AUGUST 26, 2006

Seems that Stinker is just that - a real stinker!!  We were told, "She has a little trouble getting along with other pigs - Tends to be a little bit of a bully."  Our best suggestion - bring her along and let her pick out her new friend (that way we humans can't be blamed!!)

Stinker arrived at TLP&M on Saturday morning and the search began.  She was a big, beautiful girl - so sweet and demure looking - not what a bully should look like.  We placed her into our "Let's get to know each other playpen" and then started adding all the adoptable girls.  With each new addition, Stinker became more animated.  She popped - she chirped - she stuck her nose in places it shouldn't be.  But this is the process when it comes to finding a new friend in the GP world!

She seemed to get along with everybody - she was having the time of her life!  "Can't we just take them all and tell Dad they all followed me home? Oh yeah, forgot - Dad came with us!"  So the final decision was left up to Jody.  Being a very good GP mommy, Jody decided on Flower - Stinker kept gravitating back to her every other minute.

Flower knows her name very well - she was named after the skunk in the movie 'Bambi' - but sometimes names get changed.  Not the case here -
Dad thought it way too cute to have "Stinky Flower"!!!

Renee!!  All Your Babies Have Found Their FOREVER Homes!!
AUGUST 21, 2006

Renee is the angel of this and two other Success Stories.  She and her husband found four very sick Guinea pigs in their Vandalia, OH rental property after the tenants had moved out and left them behind in a filthy Rubbermaid container with no food or water.  Renee immediately took them to a vet and found that Peanut, Patches, Mr. Pepper and Gizmo were all suffering with mites and scurvy, both very deadly with Guinea pigs if not treated.  Gizmo also had an infection that had rendered him bald over half of his body, not a happy condition for a Peruvian furball!

Renee could have walked away that day, leaving them behind.  However, she opted to care for them with the vet's help and get them back in good health at her own expense.  She and her husband even built them a 4X4 C&C habitat for housing.  On Saturday, April 15th, Renee brought these wonderful and very healthy boys to TLP&M.  Renee had grown so attached to these guys - she wanted to keep them as her own but knew that was not the best she could give them.  After many tears and tons of good-byes, Renee left the four in our care and we promised to find them all wonderful FOREVER HOMES!

Peanut was the first success story - he was adopted April 23rd and is so very spoiled and loved.  Patches was next on May 17th - he's in college now and enjoying every minute.  And then we get to Gizmo and Mr. Pepper, fondly referred to as "our small puppy" and his barber.

Gizmo and Mr. Pepper were inseparable, definitely a bonded pair.  There would be no way I would even think of splitting these two guys up.  Gizmo had grown to be the size of a small puppy and his hair was now so long that if he lay down, you couldn't tell his head from his bottom!!  Mr. Pepper had also 'plumped up'.  Yes, these two could definitely put it away - they loved their food!!  They were best buds!!  Then one day I walked into our Main Pig Room where these two were housed and WOW!!  I could see Gizmo's face - his bangs had been perfectly manicured.  Evidentally, he had asked for a little help from Mr. Pepper and, being such a good friend, was given a haircut!!

Enter Jackie and Dylan, a mother and her son from Somerset, KY looking to adopt two wonderful Guinea pigs.  They arrived on August 21st very excited even after quite a long drive.  Their description of what they were looking for (a pair that get along well, are not too young or too shy.  My son would like one who would sit with him, like to be petted, explore and play outside of the habitat once he got to know us) fit Gizmo and Mr. Pepper to a T.

This e-mail from Jackie tells the rest of the story: "We have fallen in love with them and don't want to leave them alone!  They are so beautiful!  Thank you for letting us bring them into our lives.  Dylan said they are the newest members of the family.  The dog, who Mr. Pepper has touched noses with, even got to sit and watch them with us tonight.  I can't express how much joy they have given us already.  Thank you!!

Jackie, can you send me new pics of the boys??  The ones I have are when they first came to TLP&M.  I would love to show off how beautiful and long Gizmo's hair is now and how chubby Mr. Pepper is.

Sundae, Mrs. Pepper, & Hairbow!!
AUGUST 02, 2006

This is a very sad story with a very happy ending so get your Kleenix ready.

It all started in July 2005 when Pam, her husband and their three children (Allie, Daniel & Bridgette) adopted Cocoa (renamed Brownie), PB (renamed Rick), Charcoal (renamed Checkers).  This GP trio had just arrived at TLP&M and I so wanted to keep them together so when Pam & Mark showed up with three kids (each wanting a GP), I knew Someone bigger than you or I had a hand in it.

Unfortunately, the truth regarding the age and past history of most of our Adoptables is held by those who release their animals to us; we can only rely on what is passed on.  On Sunday, February 12th, we received the very sad news that Daniel had lost his friend.  Rick had died and was on his way to Rainbow Bridge.  Daniel wanted to make sure his mom told me right away.  Then, after grieving for a while, Daniel decided he wanted another furball and on March 4, 2006, he adopted Hoss.  Everything seemed perfect.  But then - Hoss began his journey to Rainbow Bridge on July 3rd.  Again, Daniel was devastated.  But the sadness didn't end for the family.  Allie lost her wonderful Brownie just 19 days later (July 22nd).  Pam called to ask if they were doing something wrong.  There had been no symptoms - they had just died in their sleep.  We had been told they were about 3 years old - were we told correctly or was the cause simply old age?

But now we had to worry about Checkers - he really missed his cagemates!  Checkers came to check out new friends on Saturday, July 22nd.  Something just didn't seem right . . . Checkers was listless; didn't seem to care - his eyes were dim and we all became very worried.  "He wasn't like this earlier.  He ate his breakfast and was very playful."  And the family went home to care for Checkers and take him to the vet.  Unfortunately, he also died in his sleep and began his journey to Rainbow Bridge the same day.  How much more could these kids; this family handle??  Would they ever want to give love again?

Happily, the answer is YES!!  Wednesday night, August 2nd, the entire family arrived at TLP&M.  Allie adopted Sundae and Daniel adopted Mrs. Pepper.  Bridgette, the youngest, adopted Hairbow.  These three little piggys will be cared for so very well; they will want for nothing.  But the best part is - THEY WILL BE LOVED!!

Okay Pam . . . I need pictures!

JULY

The Bug has Bitten My Son!!
JULY 22, 2006

The Guinea pig bug, that is!!  Sandra and her daughter had adopted Spice in May as a companion to Pig, their neutered male.  After watching these two play and cuddle with his Mom and sister, Allan wanted his very own furball.

Allan's perfect buddy, Peppermint, was waiting.  He had arrived at TLP&M just a week earlier and really missed all the love and attention his former family gave him, especially those two little girls.  Why did they have to develop allergies??  But now he had Allan!

Sandra and Allan - sure would love to get a picture of Peppermint and his new buddy!

Back to Bullitt County!!
JULY 22, 2006

Sometimes you read the story of an animal and just know in your heart that you need to do something.  So begins Danna's story.  She read on Petfinder.com how Angela of the Bullitt Co Animal Rescue had gone to another shelter to pick up a dog that was on death-row.  While there, she also saw a male and a very pregnant female guinea pig scheduled for the gas chamber.  Thank goodness, Angela could not walk away.  She saved the two (soon to be more) furballs along with the dog she had originally come for.  On June 10th, Angela was presented with three adorable and very energetic GP babies.  But she had her hands full with her dog rescue plus she didn't know much about Guinea pigs so she called TLP&M and the entire GP family (Priscilla, the Mom; Winston, the Dad; Darby, Darcie, and Delaney) became our new residents.

Back to Danna - Her family had adopted Sunshine from the Floyd Co Animal Shelter in New Albany, IN and they wanted to adopt two more so Sunshine would not be lonely.  She was really interested in Darby and Darcie as they were about the same age as Sunshine PLUS "their story just touched my heart".  So now Darby, Darcie and Sunshine are all back in Bullitt County - together forever - with a family who loves and adores them completely!!  What a happy ending!

JUNE

Cooper - What a Clown!!
JUNE 28, 2006

Megan received a GP for her 16th birthday and she absolutely adored him.  He went everywhere with her; all over the house, every waking moment!!  Then tradegy struck while Megan was on an out-of-state mission trip - her beloved furball made that journey to Rainbow Bridge.  She was devastated when she returned after a week or two and her parents told her the horrible news.  They then told her about TLP&M.  Did she want to adopt another GP or was the hurt too fresh; too new?  Maybe just go for a visit would be a good idea.

Well, most of you know how visits go . . . who can resist our herd of wheekers!!  Certainly not Megan . . . especially when she met Cooper.  This was one very vocal and comical little piggy.  Once his food bowls were empty, he would move them around until we noticed them.  If we didn't notice them quickly enough, he would wheek until we did.  Such a personality!!  Such a lucky piggy to have found Megan!

Megan, please send us a picture - he left us before I could get my camera!

Sebastian!!
JUNE 11, 2006

Sebastian's former family moved away.  "There just isn't room for this Guinea pig", they said.  "Maybe he can find someone who can give him more attention."  Those are the kinds of heart-breaking 'excuses' we hear everyday.  Then miracles begin to happen and we know these little tragedies turn into BIG successes!!  Our hearts rejoice when 'once unwanted' furballs become the center of someone's universe!!

Carrie came into Sebastian's life and all the sorrow of losing his family disappeared.  He is such a joy; one very laid-back guy!!  Carrie was looking for a pig who liked to be held and was sociable.  They were definitely made for each other!!

I'm Not Here to Adopt - Just Along for the Ride !
JUNE 10, 2006

Famous Last Words for Toni!!  She had come with Lee for moral support but then she met Sienna and it was all over.

Toni is no stranger to TLP&M - She is a push-over for a Peruvian.  All they need do is look her way and she melts.  First, she succumbed to Patch (September 2004); then beautiful Audra (formerly Maggie) snuck her way into her heart (March 2005).  All it took for Sienna was one little cuddle and Toni was wrapped around her little paw as well!

Toni, you are one very special lady!!

Kirby !!
JUNE 10, 2006

There are some phone calls you just don't want to hear.  Such a call came from Lee to let us know that his (and our) beloved Picasso had journeyed to Rainbow Bridge.  We were all devastated but the one we were concerned with most was Houdini, Picasso's cagemate and mentor.  Lee needed to bring Houdini to TLP&M to find a new friend.

As luck (and sometimes fate) would have it, we had a baby boy by the name of Lootah we thought might get along with Houdini.  The way these two began getting along, you would think they had known each other forever.  Only one change - Lootah's name is now Kirby.  I must admit, it suits him to a T.

Lee, Picasso was a very, very lucky piggy to have you for a daddy.  I will never forget the day he first saw you - HE KNEW he was to be with you.  Piggys DO pick their humans, ya' know!

Daisy & Trixie  -  The Pictures Say Everything!!
JUNE 04, 2006

THANK YOU!!

Jenny & Mrs. C!!
JUNE 03, 2006

QUESTION #1 on our Adoption Application asks:  WHY DO YOU WANT A GUINEA PIG?  Kimberly's answer was - Three years ago, Jamie (her 8 yr-old daughter) met her friend's Guinea pig and has been talking about it non-stop ever since.  Now that is what I call dedication which is what every pet owner must possess.

Their first visit was just that - a visit.  Jamie couldn't make up her mind which of our girls 'clicked' (she kept coming back to Jenny) but her little sister, Alexis, fell in love with Mrs. C.  But no one went home with them that day - the habitat had to be built and all had to be ready before furballs moved in.

Saturday, June 3rd was a whole different outcome, though.

Alexis had been carrying around a picture of Mrs. C since she first met her so it was no surprise to me when that decision was made.  Jamie, while indecisive on the first visit, knew exactly who her pig was - Jenny.

These two wonderful girls are now being very loved and cared for which is exactly what I want for every one of our piggys!  And as you can tell, the rest of Kimberly's family are warming up quite nicely!

MAY

Boy, Does This Little Piggy Have It Made!!
MAY 17, 2006

Heather is a college student who needed a study-buddy.  She has roommates but they just didn't fit the bill of 'cute and cuddly' if you know what I mean.  Even before visiting TLP&M, Heather already knew Patches was HER PIG!  And Patches did not have any objections either.

Now this little guy is living with his own little herd (five two-legged college students).  You can believe he is getting all the attention and love one little furball can handle!!

Gideon!
MAY 13, 2006

Yes, this is the same Gideon that was adopted by Rob back in September 2005.  Unfortunately, Rob had to part with Gideon and both his buddies, Cecil and Xerxes due to circumstances beyond his control.  As stipulated in our contract, Gideon returned to us on May 11, 2006 along with Cecil and Xerxes.  Fortunately for Gideon, his new mommy was waiting in the wings!!

At first sight, Abigail immediately fell in love with Gideon.  And I do believe the feeling was mutual.  Gideon loved being cuddled and loved by Abigail.  There is no doubt in my mind that this was indeed a match made in heaven - and talk about timing!!

Sorry, I have no picture of this cutie.  Abigail, if possible, please send me one.

We Need to Expand our Piggy Family!!
MAY 08, 2006

A big THANK YOU goes to Julie and her family.

If you remember, back in late December (the 30th to be exact), Basil was adopted by Julie and her family.  While Basil loved his brother Bailey, the two of them just could not get along if housed together.  However, Julie felt sad that Basil was alone and knew he missed his brother.  That's when she decided it was time to visit TLP&M again.  Basil needed company!

Her first choice, of course, was Bailey - housed separately of course, but . . . there was a problem - Bailey had developed kidney stones and his prognosis was not good.  So we turned our attention to two girls who could live together and next door to Basil.

Minnie Mae tugged at her heart-strings followed closely by Mango, a little girl who had just arrived.  The decision had been made.

But Julie still wanted to reunite the two brothers even for a short time.  We again reminded Julie about the kidney stones, the bloody urine but nothing would deter Julie - "The brothers should be together" - so Bailey also went home with her.

In Julie's words, "Basil was SOOOOOOO happy to have other pigs.  He squeaked non-stop in a LOUD and very EXCITED way for 30 minutes straight, literally jumping up and down, running back and forth.  It was clear that he was very, very happy.  We put the two girls on one side of him and his brother Bailey on the other.  He went back and forth as if he was screaming, "My brother is here!!  My brother is here!! Yeah!!  Ooh!  Look over here!  Girls!! Yeah!! Two girls!!"

UPDATE:  Not long after Bailey's adoption, Julie faced his loss.  The kidney stones took their toll.  He is now buried in Julie's backyard between two pine trees.  Her girls have decorated large flat stones and slates with read "We love you Bailey!"  There are also three flowerpots with the same message.  Quite a tribute to a real cutie!  Julie stated, "We're glad we got Bailey reunited with Basil.  Basil's LOUD, CONTINUOUS (30 minutes) of joyful squealing when he saw his brother made it all worthwhile.  He practically jumped up and down!"

Yes, We are Back to Matchmaking!!
MAY 06, 2006

Seems that Pig (a neutered male) was ready to settle down and get married.  He had his choice of several available females but, upon seeing and meeting Spice, nothing else seemed to matter.  He had found his 'one true love' and wedding bells were heard from miles around!!

As you can tell from the picture to the left, all is well in their new home.

APRIL

And the Winner is . . . Our Wild Child!!
APRIL 30, 2006

Sometimes repeats are absolutely wonderful as was the case when we received a call from one of our previous adopters.  Seems that Alex had met Summer and Daisy, Julie and Brittney's georgeous (and fat) girls and the love bug had bitten.  (Of course, it really is hard not to fall completely in love with these little furballs called Guinea pigs!).  That's when Summer, Daisy, Brittney and Julie returned to our Center with Alex in tow; Alex wanted his own little furball to spoil rotten and he had his eye on Cherokee.

Cherokee had been nicknamed "Our Wild Child".  He loved being held and cuddled BUT . . . you had to catch him first!!  Boy, was he fast and, being a short-haired American, very slippery.  Being born in a laundry room amongst hundreds of cats and dogs had not been a peaceful and quiet introduction to the world to say the least.  Too many loud noises, too many comings and goings, just too much of everything.  He, Mom and his siblings (all five of them) were so very happy to leave the laundry room and come to TLP&M but survival instincts remained intact and everyone would run for cover every time Steve or I would walk in the room.  Within a short amount of time, everyone seemed to calm down at least a little.  That is everyone except Cherokee!!  Hence the nickname.

We began to worry that Cherokee would never find his Forever Home; calm was just not in his vocabulary.  Enter Alex - all our worries melted away  - this was indeed Cherokee's human, the ONE he had been waiting for - and we couldn't be happier!!

Thank you Alex - Give "Our Wild Child" bunches of hugs and kisses for us!  We know he is very loved and will be very spoiled!

How Do I Decide??

ADOPTED 04-23-06
Kelsey had one overwhelming decision to make and it wasn't easy at all.  For months she had wanted to become a furball Mommy and now the day had finally arrived!  She only had room for one so a single male was her choice - but who to choose??

One by one our single males joined Kelsey in the play area.  Meeny didn't seem to have any interest in Kelsey at all; he was too busy just entertaining himself with the teeter-totter.  Poco liked Kelsey but only saw her as someone to pee and poop on!  Cadbury liked lying in Kelsey's lap but his age wasn't on his side.  Washington was interested but didn't think Kelsey was THE ONE.  Then came Patches and Peanut and we divided the play area in two.  Patches began to win over the family but I could tell Peanut was working his way into Kelsey's heart.  She put Peanut down and went to the other side of the play area to see Patches.

That's when she got THE LOOK!!  Peanut started staring at Kelsey as if to say, "What are you doing over there??  You're supposed to be over here with me."  You might say the deal was sealed at that very moment.  There is no doubt in my mind that Peanut is one very lucky little Guinea pig and will be one very spoiled one too!

!! UPDATE !!
We have proof . . .
THE SPOILING HAS BEGUN!!
And will you look at "them orange lips".
This little guy just loves his oranges!!

IN on the 11th - OUT on the 15th!

ADOPTED 04-15-06
Sometimes we are only a revolving door - as was the case with Preston.

Preston's previous owner brought him to us on the 11th.  Over the phone I was told she needed to give up her 11-month old female GP named Penny.  Although we were short on space (very close to capacity), I could find room for one little girl - she could reside with our other ladies - so I told her to bring her on over and TLP&M would take her in.  Then they arrived and I placed Penny into the play area - but something just didn't look right!  After a little examination, Jerri was completely surprised that the pig she had been calling Penny for almost a year was indeed a Preston!!  A separate cage was set-up in our living room to house our new little boy.

Close to the same day, Lynn called to say that her daughter, Kathleen (our very first playpen volunteer) wanted to come by and adopt Sienna.  Her wonderful pair of males had suffered a loss and Kathleen wanted to get another piggy so her remaining male would have a friend to talk to.  NO, they would not be living together - they were to be next-door neighbors.  We scheduled an appointment for Saturday.

My heart kept telling me that Sienna needed to be with another female - she needed someone to play with - not just a boy-next-door situation (although, don't get me wrong, those can be quite nice).  I knew Kathleen had her heart set on Sienna but I had to think of the furballs.

Saturday came and so did Kathleen and Lynn.  I voiced my concerns to Kathleen and suggested she look at a few of our males just to make sure.  She played with Meeny, our little track star; Cherokee, one she had helped to socialize; then she met Preston and the fireworks began.  I do believe it was love at first sight - pig for human and human for pig!!  It just doesn't get any better than this.

Kathleen, I need a picture - he came and went before I could grab my camera!!

WOW!! what a quick response to my request!!

MARCH

I Knew the Moment I Saw This Little Guy . . .

ADOPTED 03-29-06
That he was meant for Amber.

Amber first visited TLP&M on October 26, 2005 and immediately fell in love with Dakota, one very special and comical furball.  Unfortunately,  her sweet boy began his journey to Rainbow Bridge on February 18, 2006.  Amber was devastated.  On day one Dakota had worked his way into her heart and she loved him very much.  Life without Dakota would never be the same but life without a piggy was definitely not going to happen.  Dakota would have wanted it that way.  But Amber just wasn't ready.

Until March 29th that is - when she met Oreo!  Such a lover was this little guy!  I kept telling myself that Amber was going to be his new mommy and I wasn't wrong.  Amber picked this little one up and he immediately began snuggling and cuddling.  He kept telling her all about his stay here at TLP&M and that he had been waiting just for her.

Dakota is smiling!

We Wish to Thank the Fayette Co. Humane Society Pet Expo!!

ADOPTED 03-26-05
This Little Piggy & Me was contacted to participate in the Pet Expo on March 18, 2006 at the Homeworks Mall in Jeffersonville, OH.  So we packed up our gear and one of our own furballs by the name of Ripley and drove the hour to the Expo.  We had a blast and Ripley loved all the attention he received as the only Guinea Pig there.  Our presence was the one reason Michelle and her family came to the Expo.  Her son wanted a couple of new friends and Guinea pigs were his choice.

On March 26th, the  family arrived from Bloomingburg, OH and began playing with pairs one after the other.  Then they were introduced to Mason Rudy and Cheyenne and their search came to an end.  I do believe Mason Rudy and Cheyenne knew when Michelle and her family walked in the door that they would be making the road trip to Bloomingburg!!

May I Please Come and Adopt Houston?

ADOPTED 03-25-06
So many times we have seen a person come to TLP&M with a particular furball in mind but once here, another one wins their heart and chooses to be the one they take home.

Not so with Elizabeth.  She knew from Day One that Houston was 'Her Pig' and she definitely made that very clear when she submitted her Pre-Adoption Application.  Throughout the app were (and I quote) "I would like Houston!!!!"; "I'd really like Houston!  I hope he's still available, he's the one I want."  Once we approved her application, she couldn't wait to come and take him home.  She had one little guy by the name of The Cheat who needed a friend and she knew Houston was to be that friend.

When she arrived, I waited for her to change her mind  but she never strayed from Houston. I am so glad she didn't!!

Thanks Elizabeth!!  Houston is in very good hands and I'm sure will be spoiled rotten in no time at all.  By the way, this is Houston as a baby . . . talk about adorable!!

Losing a Good Friend is Hard

ADOPTED 03-04-06
Not long ago, actually July of 2005, Daniel, his two sisters and Mom and Dad came to TLP&M and adopted three wonderful piggies who had just arrived a day or two before.  These three boys, P.B., Charcoal and Brownie were brought to us together and I was so wanting them to stay together.  My prayers were answered when Daniel and his family arrived.  P.B. became Rick and he and Daniel became best buds.

Daniel gave Rick many hours of love and attention and Rick responded by loving Daniel and making him laugh.  Sometimes things happen that you never see coming as was the case on February 12th of 2006.  Daniel lost his wonderful friend, Rick and he missed him so very much.  My heart broke when I received the e-mail (Daniel wanted me to know right away).

About a month later I received a call from Daniel's mom - Daniel wanted a new buddy and he knew that Rick would approve.  Could I find another male that would live with two other boys??  No pressure though.  If Daniel's new buddy didn't like Checkers (formerly Charcoal) and Brownie, a separate habitat would be built next door to the one housing the other boys.  I did have a male who had lived with two other males and was an absolute sweetheart.  He was a big pig with the name of Hoss that fit his personality to the tee (for those of you who remember the TV show, Bonanza).

Talk about instant bonding - I do believe Daniel and Hoss were meant to be together - and they are.  Thanks Daniel!  You have one very special furball and friend in Hoss.

Two Kids Wanting Two Lovable Furballs, Please

ADOPTED 02-11-06
Since beginning This Little Piggy & Me, my husband and I have been blessed with meeting some terrific families!  This one was no exception.

At first, Susan's children had no idea what Mom was planning for Valentine's Day however, I was let in on her little secret.  I certainly hate to ruin surprises but I am a very firm believer in pets should not be gifts; I suggested that Susan tell her kids and let them come with her to pick out their own special friends.  She did and were her kids excited!!  They made the trip from Verona, KY to meet all our piggies!

Our piggies love company which is very evident when you walk into the room.  We then gathered up all the girls, took them to the playpen and the get-to-know-you time began.  It wasn't long before two special little girls wove their way into Madison and Christian's hearts.

Madison fell in love with Mea and she promptly changed her name to Petunia.

Christian's new girl was Helen.
When asked if he was going to re-name her his only response was
"Look at her, she is definitely a Helen".
Translation - no name change for Helen.

JANUARY

WHAT A FAMILY!!

ADOPTED 01-28-06
This family is what we dream about every day here at TLP&M!!  Every member of this family was so excited to bring two wonderful little furballs into their lives.
Cincinnatians to the core and BIG, BIG Bengals fans!!  They  immediately gravitated to Augustine and Alexander and of course, fell head over heels in love!!

New names were already decided upon, being the Bengal fans that they were!!
Augustine is now known as Chad
(named after one of the most colorful Bengal players ever, Chad Johnson) and

Alexander was named Rudy
(after Rudy Johnson, one of the shortest but most powerful Bengals ever!)

Absolutely no doubt in my mind how loved and well cared for these two precious babies will be!!

THANKS Lisa, Steve, Ashley and Hannah!!
Give my boys kisses for me, OK?

The Loss of a Friend at the Age of 11
can be devastating and it definitely leaves a big hole in your heart that needs to be filled with lots of love.

That's what happened to Alyson when her beloved Larry, a black American Crested passed on to Rainbow Bridge recently.  In fact, his passing affected the entire household . . . even the family cats seemed to miss him.

So Alyson's mom, Sharon searched the web and found This Little Piggy & Me.  It didn't matter to her that she lived in Louisville and we were north of Cincinnati.  Once Alyson told her that she saw Larry's loving look in Linus' eyes, she was hooked.  Another family was going on a Road Trip to TLP&M!

I know I've said this many times before but . . . there is nothing cuter than baby Guinea pigs!!  Linus and Shroeder are definitely proof of that.

Unfortunately, Alyson had to endure another loss before Linus and Shroeder came into her life.  Her dear friend and companion, her dog Molly was hit by a car and didn't survive.  This little girl has one huge hole to be filled with love and I have no doubts Linus and Shroeder will be more than able
